Black Lives Matter

Italy | 2021

In Verona, Italy, the global Black Lives Matter protest movement against racial injustice and police violence resonated among young Afro-Italians.

Born and raised in Italy, they face daily challenges resulting from societal prejudices and systemic limitations. Their Italian identity is often not officially recognised or legally conceded.  Even after being legally recognised, individuals continue to be considered as "different" by others, creating feelings of exclusion and marginalisation.

Italy's issues with racism can be demonstrated by the immigration laws and administration, and in its citizenship proceedings for children born in Italy from migrant parents.
